Dependence on Pain Medication Is a Growing Problem, Alternatives Lacking

Dependence on painkillers is on the rise among patients with chronic pain, in part due to a lack of vigilance by medical professionals, a new study has found. Those dealing with dependence issues also cite frustration at a lack of alternatives and poor communication with their doctor(s).

Current conventional treatment for chronic pain usually involves the use of prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), gabapentinoids, and opioids, which are associated with a heightened risk of overdose and misuse/dependence. 

The study focused on investigating the experience of patients who have become dependent on some type of pain medication. Many described “a lack of continuity between doctors” as part of the reason their dependence was missed in the early stages and believed that medications were prescribed too readily with no alternative options.

“Medication can help alleviate pain and return a sense of normalcy to a person’s life; however, there is a risk of dependence,” said Dr Bridget Dibb, study author. “...To prevent this from happening medical professionals need to be more vigilant when prescribing medication and ensure that their patients are fully aware of the risk of dependence before they begin treatment.”

Swapping Meat for Plant-Based Foods Greatly Lowers Heart Disease, Diabetes Risk

Replacing 50 g of processed meat per day with plant-based alternatives may cut the risk of heart disease by up to 25%, a new research review has found. In addition, swapping out processed meat for plant-based options was associated with a 21% lower risk of death from any cause.

The review included data from over 30 studies that involved switching out animal-based foods for plant-based foods and specifically analyzed the effects of this dietary change on cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and all-cause mortality.

Trading red or processed meats for plant-based whole foods had the greatest beneficial effects, though reducing consumption of other types of meat, like poultry, was generally positive as well. Along with significantly cutting the risk of heart disease, going from animal to plant foods also reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Legumes, nuts, and whole grains were used most frequently in the studies as meat replacements, particularly because of the good protein content in nuts and legumes. Swapping out butter for olive oil also had benefits for overall heart health.
